By ROBERT PETERSON

Life Begins at Forty Man, 80, Teaches Fitness

By ROBERT PETERSON

Not long ago my sagging physique convinced me I needed to get acquainted with a physical fitness course. So a friend steered me to Joseph Pilates who is 80 years old,.

It's natural for men that age to be pale and frail. But this incredible old gentleman is bronzed as mahogany and looks husky enough to wrestle a rhino. Over the past four decades he and his wife have developed an exercising technique known as contrology.

It involves acquiring complete control of one's muscles through repetition of 100 basic exercises. Aware that most people haven't the time to trot to a -gym daily for exercises, Pilates emphasizes exercises that can be pursued at home-ten minutes each morning and evening.

In short order I had chucked my gray flannels, slipped into shorts and slippers, and was lying flat on a canvas mat tackling the first course in his smorgasbord of setting-up exercises. Along with the exercises Pilates tosses in gratis his philosophy for health and vitality. In stentorian tones he reminds you that health is largely dependent on getting adequate exercise.

"One of the wonders of the world," says he, is that people give their wonderful, complex bodies less consideration than they show their automobiles. Cars can be replaced but your body is the only one you'll have. Yet not one person in a thousand takes the time each day to see that it is properly exercised."

He doesn't believe in the usual kind of weight-pulling routines designed to produce big muscles. Instead, he teaches movements that are rhythmic and controlled -designed to drive fresh blood to every muscle fibre, particularly to the capillaries which are at skin-level and which are rarely stimulated once we become adults.

This creates what he calls an internal shower" or housecleaning of the entire body. He also teaches proper breathing -deep-down breathing to supply the blood stream with plenty of oxygen.

Most folks in sendentary work," he declared, wonder why they're so tired at night when they haven't done any physical work. Or they may wonder why they pick up colds and illnesses so easily. The reason is that impurities collect in an unexercised body and create fatigue and sluggishness. If a person learns to devote a few minutes every morning and evening to the right exercises and proper breathing, he will have fewer illnesses and greater vitality."

I think he's right. And certainly physicians concur that most men and women today simply don't get the physical shaking up necessary for generating vitality and warding off illness. It's a little late for New Year's resolutions, but I suspect we'd be doing our health and longevity a favor if we resolved never to let a day pass without taking a gentle dose of planned exercise.

If you would like a free booklet Exercises for Folks Past Forty write to this column in care of the Taylor Daily Press enclosing a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

We don't know whether she's read this book-but it's serving a purpose even if she hasn't. With the stomach muscle she pushes the book up as high as she can, then lowers it by pulling the muscles in. It reduces the abdomen.
