Joseph Pilates
Joseph Hubertus Pilates was born 9 December 1883 in Mönchengladbach, Germany. His father, Heinrich Friedrich Pilates, who was born in Greece, was a metal worker and enthusiastic gymnast, and his German-born mother was a housewife. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Pilates#cite_note-Rincke,_Joseph_Pilates-1

The Pilates method of contrology was founded by her husband, the late Joseph Pilates, who came to the United States in 1926 with his wife, a nurse, from Germany. Together they founded the Joseph H. Pilates Universal Gymnasium.

Originally referred to Joseph Pilates by fellow dancer for treatment of a chronic knee injury, Fletcher was schooled in the principles of Body Contrology (the name Pilates gave to his fitness and conditioning method) by Joseph and Clara Pilates, with whom he studied in their New York City studio at 939 8th Avenue,[6] on and off from 1948 until one year after Joseph Pilates’ death in 1967.

Eventually in 1954 Grant required surgery on her knee due to an injury. The recovery from that surgery was slow and left her in pain. Dancer Pearl Lang suggested Grant attend Pilates' studio where she met Joseph Pilates and began regaining the use of her leg. Grant was interested in this new technique and in 1967 having studied under Pilates and completed 2,200 hours of training Grant was one of only two people to get a qualification from him to teach his work. The other was Lolita San Miguel.
Grant used this experience and worked with Carola Trier at her Pilates Studio before becoming director of the Pilates Gym at the Henri Bendel Department Store. She went on to join the faculty of NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Grant also travelled extensively across the USA teaching Pilates

The collection includes photographs, correspondence, studio records, research files, clippings, files pertaining to a children's book she wrote, performance programs, immigration documents, and artifacts.

She saw an article in a newspaper with a man standing with his bare barrel of a chest, bare legs, swimming trunks and a white mane of hair. Joe was an intriguing sight – a human lion! In the short article he said "I base my method on the baby and the cat!" She had never had a baby or a cat, but she took it upon herself to find Joseph Pilates! That was the beginning of a life "root."
Mary's back improved after only two lessons with Joe. Since walking into Joe and Clara's studio fifty years ago, she has taken one to two lessons every week for all those years. Her New York City Pilates teachers have been: 6 and a half years twice a week with Joe, Clara and Hanna, 7 years with Bob Seed, 7 years at Romana Krysanowska's, 7 years with Kathy Grant, 7 years with Bruce King and Jean Claude West concurrently, and since 1995 with Christine Wright.

While at the Met, in 1958, I suffered a knee injury and was taken to Dr. Henry Jordan at Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Jordan was Chief Orthopedic Surgeon and enjoyed treating dancers. He told me I did not need surgery but he recommended I keep the quadriceps strong in order to protect the knee joint and suggested I go to Carola Trier’s Pilates Studio. Carola Trier had been trained by Joseph Pilates. She was an ex-dancer and acrobat and her studio in Manhattan was frequented by dancers and athletes in need of fitness and rehabilitation. Ms. Trier had two assistants working for her Romana Kryzanowska and Kathleen Stanford Grant
