First published in 1934, this new reprint of Your Health includes Joseph Pilates' early Twentieth Century philosophies, principles, and theories about health and fitness. He bases his work on the concept of a balanced body and mind, drawing on the approach espoused by the early Greeks. While some of his personal philosophies reflected early 20th Century viewpoints, his athletic and fitness doctrines were years ahead of his time. Readers will learn his observations and conclusions about people's approach to physical fitness. He describes the results of decades of scientific study, experimentation and research into the variety of troubles and ills that upset the balance of body and mind. Pilates makes extraordinary claims about the benefits of his defined science of Contrology and very specifically defines this science for all to read and understand. In this book, he exemplifies and clarifies the beneficial impact of his work.

The surprising story of Pilates—the man and the method.

Part biography, part history, and part memoir, "Caged Lion" untangles for the first time Joseph Pilates’s opaque life story and the perilous journey of his exercise program known the world over as Pilates.

This is the story of Joseph Pilates, a gifted man who immigrated to the United States at forty-three with no assets or credentials. He not only invented an exercise regimen—which today is practiced by more than ten million people—but in the process, reinvented himself.

John Howard Steel brings Joseph Pilates and his eponymous exercise regime to life from his unique perspective as a student, friend, and confidant. Joe’s influence profoundly changed Steel’s life; in turn, Steel was crucial for the survival of the Pilates Method and Joe’s legacy. Steel’s vivid account traces the expansion of Pilates from a small cadre of dedicated adherents, through two periods of near extinction, to the global sensation it is today. Steel describes Joseph Pilates’s years as a prisoner during World War I, Joe’s motivation to discover his system of exercises, his inspirational teaching technique, and the unique attraction of the Pilates Method. It’s quite a story.

Take a detailed look at your Pilates practice with the superbly illustrated exercises in Pilates Anatomy, Second Edition.

Choose from 46 exercises to target a particular body region and delve deeper to stretch, strengthen, and finely coordinate specific muscles. See which key muscles are activated, how variations and minor adjustments can influence effectiveness, and how breathing, alignment, and movement are all fundamentally linked as you work to tone the body, stabilize the core, improve balance, and increase flexibility.

Use the Personalize Your Practice section for each exercise to vary your practice and customize your workouts to fit your needs. Here you’ll find modifications to make each exercise more accessible when there are limitations such as tight hamstrings or underdeveloped core strength. Variations provide variety, and progressions are offered to add more challenge to each exercise and serve as valuable stepping stones on your journey to more advanced Pilates exercise.

New York born and raised, Lolita San Miguel has spent much of her life living in her parents’ birthplace, La Isla del Encanto: The Island of Enchantment. Puerto Rico’s abundant charm and allure surely became infused in her blood, for Lolita is a person who radiates vitality, grace, and sagacity. Her irrepressible and indefatigable energy and spirit have earned her a rich and var¬ied life—and one brimming with accomplishment. Lolita became a professional dancer at age sixteen and performed as a leading soloist with New York City’s Metropolitan Opera Ballet for ten years. There, she worked with and befriended many of the finest teachers, dancers, choreographers, opera singers, and musicians of the day. A knee injury led Lolita to a meeting with Joseph Pilates, creator of the body conditioning and rehabilitation program that bears his name. She eventually became one of only two people certified by the legendary man himself. As such, she is acknowledged as a Pilates Elder, of whom there are only two remaining. Returning to Puerto Rico, Lolita founded and directed Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico. During her twenty-seven years at the helm, the Company con¬tinually broke new ground, performing to acclaim across the United States and abroad. After resettling in South Florida, Lolita began mentoring Pilates instructors. She then honored her own mentor, Joseph Pilates, by organizing a memo¬rial-plaque ceremony at his birthplace in Mönchengladbach, Germany. Most recently, she established Lolita’s LegacyTM, a teacher-training program, to ensure that the healthful benefits of Pilates will continue to spread through¬out the world.Lolita San Miguel’s My Enchanted Life

In this second edition, world-renowned Pilates expert Rael Isacowitz shows you the same repertoire that he has used to train multiple Olympians as well as an elite group of professional instructors who work with celebrities and athletes around the world.

Starting with the foundation for all the exercises, Pilates presents an in-depth treatment of mat work, including photos, imagery cues, and detailed instruction on breathing to help you perform the movements correctly. The mat work in this edition is organized according to a mat-specific version of the comprehensive BASI Block System used for the apparatus work. This arrangement enhances understanding of the expansive repertoire and provides the tools for creating personalized mat routines. A unique set of challenging exercise sequences is offered to facilitate performing the movements in one continuous, flowing motion.

After the mat work, where most books stop entirely, Pilates goes on to apply the same depth of instruction and photos to the full range of Pilates apparatus:

• Reformer

• Cadillac

• Wunda chair

• Step and ladder barrels

• Ped-a-pul

• Arm chair

• Magic circle

The complete repertoire includes a purposeful grouping of exercises into blocks that work all regions of the body and progress from the fundamental level through the intermediate and advanced levels to challenge you at all stages of Pilates development.

With more than 200 exercises and more than 50 variations, Pilates is the most comprehensive guide available on the method. As a contemporary approach to the work of Joseph Pilates, this is the one book you need in order to improve your balance, concentration, coordination, posture, muscle tone, core strength, and flexibility—in short, your well-being.

The Pilates Effect: Heroes Behind the Revolution – 9月 2019
by   Sarah W. Holmes (Author), Stacey Redfield (Author)

    • With over 9 million Americans practicing Pilates, the popular core exercise system is taking the world by storm. While many find the system helps to strengthen the core, improve posture, and recover from or prevent injuries and pain, Pilates has been clouded in controversy since the beginning. Its origin story is one of greed, ego, celebrities, and lies, with heated legal controversy that threatened the industry.

    •

    • In The Pilates Effect, Stacey Redfield and Sarah Holmes reveal the hidden history of Pilates. From humble beginnings, Joseph Pilates founded the groundbreaking regimen in New York City and worked closely with his partner Clara to rehabilitate and renew dancers who had been injured or were aging. Although Joseph's core strengthening regime was touted as "fifty years ahead of [its] time," finance and health issues plagued Joe and Clara's business. A small and devoted group of followers, including Carola Trier, would fight to spread the practice that they felt gave them a second chance at life and rehabilitated their bodies and souls.

    •

    • A fascinating and inspiring story of fitness in America, The Pilates Effect showcases the people and events that formed an iconic industry. Redfield and Holmes offer inspiration and practical advice for how Pilates can offer change for everyday people regardless of gender, ethnicity, or background.
