PHYSICAL FITNESS PROGRAM OUTLINED FOR BOEING WOMEN
Miss Lilyan Malmstead of New York to Spend Two Weeks in Wichita
TO PREVENT FATIGUE
Physical fitness for women war workers is the theme and object back of a plan. that brought to Wichita Sunday Miss Lilyan Malmstead, operator of a famed New York physical culture salon and originator of a program of new physical exercises designed to relieve industrial fatigue.
As a public service contribution to the nation's war effort, Coty, Inc., manufacturer of cosmetics and perfumes, has sent Miss Malmstead to Wichita to institute a program of physical fitness and exercises for the women employes of the Boeing Airplane company. Working under the direction of the Coty company, Miss Malmstead has worked on her program in a number of great war production plants in the East, but to date her work in the plants has been confined to lectures and to personal demonstration of her system of exercises.
The arrangement with the Boeing company here will give Miss Malmstead her first opportunity to work with a group of employes over an extended period of time, actually directing them daily in a program of fatigue preventing exercises. Russell Mosser, director of education for the Boeing personnel department, said Sunday the company planned to have Miss Malmstead work with the women engaged in their paid training program at the board of education's division of aircraft training, formerly known as the national defense training school, at 151 North Waco,
Here Two Weeks
Miss Malmstead plans to be here about two weeks. She plans to work with the women on all three shifts in the aircraft training division. Bubbling with enthusiasm, she had the window of her room at the Allis hotel wide open Sunday afternoon, enjoying the Wichita air, which she seemed to consider a rare treat. She is a graduate of the Sargent school of physical education and completed her research work at King's College hospital, London, and the Children's hospital , Paris. The Malmstead system of physical exercise is based on the premise that the body should be released occasionally from the evils of constant forward-bending caused by ordinary daily activities and work.
This is accomplished by a system of uplifting the body and developing muscular balance through backward bending exercises. Through years of planning, Miss Malmstead has reduced her program to a set of 12 exercises, all based on the idea of bending backward.
"I'm bending over backwards in my efforts to help the war industry workers do a better job," Miss Malmstead said Sunday. "War plant workers, constantly bending forward in exhausting and cramping positions, need backward bending exercises designed to counteract, by reversal of daily postures, the evils of forward slumping and bending.
Steady hours in a forward bending position make it all the more important that time be taken occasionally to relieve the body from tension and strain."
Requires Little Time
Miss Malmstead contends that six minutes a day, devoted to her exercises, will strengthen the body, improve health and the figure, and build resistance against fatigue.
Working with the cooperation of school authorities and Boeing company officials, she will begin her program with the Boeing employes in the aircraft training division Monday morning.
Boeing personnel officials feel that Miss Malmstead's work will be of particular value to them because so many of the new employes going into aircraft production work here are housewives and other women who have not done strenuous work for a number of years. These women, they say, must be toughened up physically before they are ready for the daily rigors of factory work. They feel that any program which can develop individual resistance against fatigue will be of inestimable value to the new war production workers.

Keep Your Chin Up, If you want a lovely figure
LENGTHEN the line between your waist and your chin and you will not only lengthen your life but also increase your beauty.
That is the firm belief of Lilyan Malmstead. She is known as a successful lecturer and author on beauty and health, and her newest hook, "Awaken Your Sleeping Beauty." seems to contain some rather practical suggestions for better looks.
Erectitude that is her key word. She explains it thus:
"This carriage lifts the body upward and backward-thus lengthening the front of the body from chin to the waist, and shortening it correspondingly in the back and seeks to correct the activities of common usage forced on us by occupation."
She is opposed to all forward-bending exercises because, according to her, they violate the heritage of man, which is to be able to stand up straight. But her series of attitudes (exercises), two of which are given here with illustrations, insist on the backward line of exercise.
"A backward-bending motion," she explains, "brings the body into a continuous curve, continually reviving one's energy and endurance, and expressing freedom and harmony.
Miss Malmstead is considered a perfect physical specimen and her proportions are lik ened to those of the modern Venus. Therefore, her attitudes or exercises, which she claims have helped her achieve such beauty, might be worth trying.
"Not more than six minutes a day are required for practice. But hourly application of the principle of erectitude is of greatest necessity to insure proper bodily proportions," she says.
Attitude for awakening the beauty of the abdomen, shoulders and waistline: Separate feet about 12 inches. With left hand touching back of left knee, bend body to left side. At the same time, swing right arm in front of the face and circle arm over in the direction of the left side, as in the upper sketch. Continue by raising arm high over the head, down toward the right side until hand touches back of the right knee, at same time releasing the left hand from left knee.
Now swing the left arm in front of the face and circle arm over in direction of the right side, continuing by raising arm high above the head, down toward the left side until hand touches back of left knee, at the same time re- leasing the right hand from the right knee.
Continue these movements, alternating first one and then the other until you have completed 16, keeping the body backward from the waistline when bending to side.
This second attitude from her book "Awaken Your Sleeping Beauty" is to in crease the beauty of back, abdomen and hips. Lie face downward on firm bed or flat table (as shown in the lower sketch). Rest the upper part of body on bed or table. Reach arms above the head, grasping either side of bed or table. Keep both legs together.
Swing legs backward upward to the level of the table or a little higher, raising head upward at same time. Hesitate for a moment, then- Drop head and lower legs to floor. Instantly repeat for 10 counts. In order to accomplish the desired results, each swing should be spontaneous. Avoid any drag. (The Sunday Morning Star 1935 Oct)
