Thanks for memories of past training

There is one thing I have learned since subscribing to daily delivery of The Kingston Whig-Standard - you keep abreast of what is going on every day, on a daily basis. I should also say 37 years ago, too. The Feb. 10 issue on Health about the Pilates method of corrective exercise really has paid off.

The story starts as far back as 1957, the summer of my scholarship in Colorado with the famous choreographer Hanya Holme who did the work with my My Fair Lady, a popular musical at that time, and later Camelot in 1960, which ran at the O'Keefe Centre.

By the summer of 1959, I was back for a second time on another scholar-ship. At 29 years of age I was making some serious decisions about where my life was going. It was that summer when Miss Holmes mentioned Joseph Pilates' studio in New York City and he was looking for an assistant. By Christmas, I found myself in his studio learning and experiencing this new kind of therapy.

Joe accepted me with open arms and so did his wife, Clara. Joe was in his 79th year and Clara a little younger.

I lived and worked in his studio well into the next year before returning to Toronto where I introduced his method to the National Ballet School and summer sessions for dancers from all across Canada.

Now, 37 years later, I find three studios in Toronto using his system. He called it "contrology," "the knowledge of body movement." The "muscle memory" is what I was taught, even after 15 years of dance study, while un- der his wing.

Because of your article, I am going to assist as much as I can Monica Morrow, who will introduce this method to us in Kingston.

My apparatus, called "the Reformer," and the routine that goes with it, will enhance the workout.

Without this training I never would have gotten through this life.

I am retired now at age 66, but thanks to your story I am returning to the good old days of New York City and the Pilates Method of training. Thanks to The Whig for the article, and to all who helped make it possible.
