BREATHE. "There are two things in life we take for granted," says Carola Trier, a NYC specialist in exercise and body conditioning. "One is walking, the other is breathing, and most of us don't do either one correctly. (Vogue magazine April 1983)

Take a chair... that's the first direction for these four exercises, to be done at the beach or anywhere that suits. Each of the four has some special objective (specified later), but all four together are a part of the move toward firmness, tone, flexibility, strength. We took our own lessons for these photographs from body-conditioning teacher Carola Trier, steered by a young man named David Leddick.

Outside the will to exercise and the bodily power to exercise, there's a crucial layer of force. About which, good news. Proved improvable at almost any age, muscle tone can profit from a proper workout. From the work of the body-shrinkers, that is.

The pert young woman shown on these pages is Lydia Bach. She runs the Lotte Berk Method Studio, an exercise salon in New York City. Its patrons are all women. So the exercises she teaches are much too easy for the serious skier looking for a conditioning program to get those legs into shape-right? Wrong!

Shown here are some of the toughest thigh, stomach, and stretch exercises-all of vital importance to skiers-that you're ever likely to attempt. They may look easy-but done properly, they're murder.
